Lift With Your Back

Today we are looking at the deadlift.

The best way to deadlift is by using leg drive, but I want to ignore that for this post in order to highlight a separate main cue.

When you deadlift, you must lift with your back.

Your upper back, that is.

It is natural to want to pull up at the bar as shown below…

A better cue is to lead the way with your upper back as shown below…

From your start position, Imagine someone was using their hand to push down on your upper back. Drive your legs into the ground and at the same time begin to push their hand up with your upper back.

The upper back leads the way and the bar comes along for the ride.
